Submerged arc welded round pipe, commonly abbreviated as SAW pipe, is a type of welded steel round pipe manufactured by the submerged‑arc welding process. It falls into two main categories: LSAW (longitudinal submerged arc welded pipe) and SSAW (spiral submerged arc welded pipe).
During production, steel plates or steel coils are formed into circular tubular blanks, and welding is carried out under a layer of granular welding flux. The welding arc is buried beneath the flux layer, which shields the molten weld pool from air contamination. This welding method delivers deep penetration, stable weld formation and high welding efficiency.
Submerged arc welded round pipe can be produced in large outer diameters and heavy wall thicknesses. It is widely applied for oil & gas transmission, water supply and drainage pipelines, piling foundation, thermal engineering and steel structure projects. The products need to go through non‑destructive testing such as ultrasonic inspection and radiographic testing to verify weld quality, complying with standards including API 5L, GB/T 9711 and other relevant specifications.
